Anybody who has taken a 1911 down to its bare bones knows how fast tiny parts scatter across a workbench. The TekMat Ultra 20 gives you a full 15 by 20 inches of dedicated space, which is plenty of room to lay out a completely stripped pistol along with your punches, brushes, and solvent bottles without stacking parts on top of each other. It is part of TekMat's Ultra line, the step up from their original mats, offering more real estate, thicker padding, and a sewn edge that keeps things looking sharp.
What sets this one apart from a shop towel or a strip of cardboard is the construction. The quarter-inch vulcanized rubber backing cushions your slide and frame against drops and dings while keeping the mat planted so it won't slide around while you work. That same rubber blocks oil, solvent, and dirt from soaking through to your bench or kitchen table, which is where a lot of folks end up doing their cleaning anyway.
The printed surface uses dye-sublimation, meaning the ink is heat-transferred into the fibers rather than silkscreened on top. That translates to a diagram that won't scratch off or fade after a few cleaning sessions, and the soft thermoplastic fiber top won't shed loose threads that end up inside your gun. The full 1911 parts diagram and history overview printed across the mat make it a genuinely useful reference during teardown and reassembly, especially if you're still learning where every spring and pin belongs.
When the mat gets grimy, a little mild soap and water with a soft brush brings it right back. The stitched perimeter is a nice touch that keeps the edges from fraying or curling over time, and the whole thing rolls up so it stores easily alongside the rest of your cleaning kit. It's a simple piece of gear that quietly makes every maintenance session cleaner and more organized.
Yes, that's the whole point of the Ultra 20. At 15 by 20 inches it gives you room to lay out a completely stripped 1911 with space left over for punches, brushes, and your solvent bottles. You won't be stacking parts on top of each other.
Just use mild soap and water with a soft brush or sponge and gently scrub the printed surface, then rinse and let it air dry. Skip bleach, harsh chemicals, and abrasive pads since those can wear on the print over time. Hand washing is the safest bet for keeping it looking new.
It shouldn't. The graphics are applied with dye-sublimation, which heat-transfers the ink down into the fibers rather than sitting on top like a silkscreen. That gives you a diagram that resists scratching and fading through normal cleaning use.
No, the quarter-inch vulcanized rubber backing keeps it planted while you work. That same rubber layer cushions your slide and frame and stops oil and solvent from soaking through to your table or workbench underneath.
