There's something to be said for a revolver you can shoot all afternoon without your wallet or your wrist complaining. The Taurus 942 Ultra Lite in .22LR is exactly that kind of gun. Built on the same small frame as the well-known Taurus 856, it gives you eight rounds in the cylinder instead of the five or six you'd get from a centerfire snub, and the matte stainless finish over the aluminum alloy frame keeps the whole package at a carry-friendly 18.8 ounces.
The DA/SA action gives you options. Run it double action to build trigger control the way revolver shooters have for generations, or thumb the hammer back for a light, crisp single-action break when you're working on precision. The 3-inch barrel adds a bit of sight radius and velocity over the 2-inch version without hurting concealability, and the serrated ramp front sight pairs with a drift-adjustable rear so you can dial in windage for your preferred load. Finger-grooved polymer grips keep your hand planted, though with .22LR recoil, planted is a pretty easy job.
This is the classic kit gun formula updated for today. Toss it in a pack for hiking or fishing trips, hand it to a new shooter who's not ready for centerfire blast, or use it as an inexpensive training stand-in for a .38 snub. Since the 942 shares its frame and grip dimensions with the 856 line, holster and grip options are plentiful, which is a nice perk for a rimfire wheelgun.
No magazines to lose, no springs to wear out, just load eight, close the cylinder, and go. If you've been looking for a lightweight .22 revolver that pulls double duty as a plinker and a trainer, the 942 Ultra Lite is a hard combination to beat.
It's one of the friendlier first handguns out there. The .22LR chambering means almost no recoil or muzzle blast, the manual of arms is as simple as it gets, and rimfire ammo is cheap enough to practice often. The double-action trigger also builds solid fundamentals that carry over to larger revolvers.
The Ultra Lite version uses an aluminum alloy frame instead of all-steel construction, which drops the weight to around 18.8 ounces. That makes it noticeably easier to carry all day in a holster or pack. You give up a little heft on the bench, but with .22LR recoil, you won't miss it.
In most cases, yes. The 942 is built on the same small frame as the Taurus 856, with matching external dimensions, cylinder diameter, and grip frame. That means most 856 holsters and aftermarket grips will work with this revolver, giving you plenty of carry and customization options.
Yes. It's a true DA/SA revolver with an exposed hammer, so you can shoot it double action with a longer pull or cock the hammer for a shorter, lighter single-action break. Single action is great for slow-fire accuracy work, while double action is ideal for defensive-style practice.
