Small frame revolvers have stuck around for a good reason: they go bang every time, they carry easily, and there is nothing to overthink when it matters. The Taurus 856 Ultra Lite takes that classic formula and trims the weight down to about 16 ounces unloaded thanks to its aluminum frame, so it rides comfortably in a holster or a bag all day long. This particular model dresses that frame in a Cerakote rose gold finish set against a matte stainless barrel and cylinder, giving it a two tone look that is genuinely sharp in person without sacrificing anything in function.
A lot of small frame .38s in this size class hold five rounds. The 856 fits six in the cylinder, and that extra round is a real advantage in a defensive revolver. It is also rated for .38 Special +P, so you can practice with soft shooting target loads and carry stouter defensive ammo in the same gun. The soft rubber grip does a nice job soaking up recoil, which makes range sessions with this lightweight frame a lot more pleasant than you might expect.
The double action/single action setup gives you options. Run it double action for fast defensive work, or thumb the hammer back for a lighter, crisper single action pull when you have time to make a precise shot. Up front you get a removable serrated blade sight paired with a fixed rear, simple and snag free for quick sight acquisition at realistic defensive distances. A transfer bar safety keeps things drop safe without adding levers or buttons to fumble with.
At 6.55 inches long, 4.8 inches tall, and 1.41 inches wide, the 856 Ultra Lite conceals about as easily as any six shot wheelgun out there. The 2 inch barrel keeps the whole package compact whether you carry on body, in a bag, or keep it staged for home defense. If you want a dependable revolver with a little personality, this rose gold and stainless combo is a great way to get it.
Yes, this model is rated for .38 Special +P. That means you can run standard pressure loads for affordable practice and step up to +P defensive ammo for carry. Just keep in mind that +P out of a 16 ounce revolver has noticeably more kick, so it is worth practicing with your carry load.
The Ultra Lite uses an aluminum frame and weighs around 16 ounces unloaded, while the standard all steel 856 runs closer to 22 ounces. That difference is significant when you carry every day. The tradeoff is a bit more felt recoil, though the rubber grip helps take the edge off.
No, the frame wears a Cerakote rose gold finish, which is a durable ceramic based coating known for holding up well to holster wear and daily handling. The barrel and cylinder have a matte stainless finish, so the two tone look is built to last with normal care.
It does. Most snub nose revolvers in this size class carry five rounds, but the 856 fits six in the cylinder while staying about the same overall size. That extra round is one of the biggest reasons folks pick the 856 over comparable small frame wheelguns.
