The Taurus 856CH takes that formula and smooths it out even further by tucking the hammer spur out of the way entirely. There is nothing on the back of this frame to hang up on a cover garment, a jacket pocket, or the edge of a holster, which is exactly what you want when the draw matters more than anything else.
Most small frame .38s in this class max out at five rounds. Taurus built the 856 series around a six-round cylinder without ballooning the footprint, so you get an extra shot in a package that still measures just 6.55 inches long and about 1.41 inches wide. It is rated for .38 Special +P, so you can train with soft-shooting standard pressure loads and carry stouter defensive ammo with full confidence. The carbon steel frame brings the weight to around 22 ounces unloaded, and that heft is your friend here. It settles the gun down under recoil and makes range sessions a lot more pleasant than what you get from the featherweight alternatives.
The sighting setup is classic snubby: a serrated ramp up front to cut glare and a fixed notch in the rear. Nothing to knock loose, nothing to adjust, just point and press. The rubber grip is one of the nicer touches in this price range, with finer texture on the sides, more aggressive checkering along the backstrap, and finger grooves that help you get a consistent hold every time.
This is a double action only gun, so every trigger pull is the same long, deliberate stroke. That consistency is a real asset in a defensive revolver, and the transfer bar safety means it only fires when the trigger is pulled all the way through. Matte black finish over the frame, barrel, and cylinder keeps things subdued and low maintenance. Load it, carry it, forget it is there until you need it.
Yes, the 856CH is rated for .38 Special +P. The steel frame and 22-ounce weight do a nice job taming the extra pressure, so it stays manageable with hotter defensive loads. A lot of owners practice with standard pressure range ammo and keep +P loaded for carry.
Not quite, and that is worth understanding. The hammer is still there, it just has no spur, so there is nothing to snag on clothing during the draw. Because there is no spur to cock, the gun runs double action only, meaning every shot uses the same full-length trigger pull.
The big advantage is capacity. Where most revolvers this size hold five rounds, the 856 gives you six without a meaningful jump in bulk. At 6.55 inches long and about 1.41 inches wide, it conceals just as easily as most of the five-shot competition.
It is a strong pick. The double action only trigger keeps operation dead simple, the fixed sights never need adjusting, and the rubber grip takes the sting out of recoil. There is very little to learn and even less to go wrong, which is exactly what most people want in a defensive wheel gun.
