Most medium-frame .357 revolvers give you six rounds and call it a day. The Taurus 66 gives you seven, and that extra shot has been part of this model's identity since Taurus bumped the capacity back in 1999. This version wears a matte black oxide finish over solid steel construction, with a 4-inch barrel that hits the sweet spot for a do-it-all wheelgun: long enough to get real velocity out of magnum loads, short enough to ride comfortably in a belt holster.
The DA/SA action means you can run it double action for fast follow-up work or thumb the exposed hammer back for a lighter, crisper single-action press when you are squeezing accuracy out at the range. Since it is chambered in .357 Magnum, it also digests .38 Special +P, which is a big deal in practice. Cheap, soft-recoiling .38s for training and plinking, full-house magnums when it matters. The ribbed rubber grips do a nice job soaking up recoil either way, and at around 38 ounces the 66 has enough heft to keep magnum loads manageable without feeling like a boat anchor.
Up top you get a fixed ramp front sight paired with a micrometer-adjustable rear, so you can dial in your preferred load instead of settling for whatever a fixed-sight gun gives you. A transfer bar safety keeps the hammer off the firing pin unless the trigger is fully pulled, and the integrated Taurus Security System lets you lock the action with a key when the gun is stored.
This is the kind of revolver that covers a lot of ground for one gun. Nightstand duty, range sessions, a woods-walking sidearm, or a first centerfire revolver that will not need replacing as skills grow. Simple controls, swing-out cylinder, no magazines to keep track of, and seven at the ready. Hard to argue with that formula.
Yes. Like any revolver chambered in .357 Magnum, the Model 66 runs .38 Special and .38 Special +P without issue. A lot of owners train with softer-shooting .38s and load magnums for defense or the woods. It is one of the biggest perks of owning a .357 wheelgun.
Seven. Most medium-frame .357 revolvers top out at six, so the 66 gives you one extra round in the cylinder. Taurus added the seventh chamber to this model back in 1999, and it has been a signature feature ever since.
It does both well. The 4-inch barrel is a classic all-around length, balanced in the hand, quick from a holster, and long enough to get solid velocity from magnum loads. At 38 ounces it carries best on a sturdy belt, and that same weight makes it very pleasant to shoot all day at the range.
The rear sight is micrometer adjustable for windage and elevation, paired with a fixed ramp front. That lets you zero the gun to your specific load instead of living with wherever a fixed-sight revolver happens to hit. It is a nice touch at this price point and handy if you switch between .38s and magnums.
