Description

Taurus dropped the 650 from the catalog back in 2017 and people never stopped asking about it. Now it has returned, and this stainless 3 inch version might be the pick of the litter. You get a small frame, five shot .357 Magnum with a fully enclosed hammer, so there is no spur to catch on a jacket, waistband, or pocket lining when you need it out in a hurry. The double action only trigger gives you one consistent pull every time, with enough spring behind it to reliably light off magnum primers, which matters more than people think in a carry revolver.

Why the 3 Inch Taurus 650 Makes Sense

The extra inch of barrel over the standard snub buys you a longer sight radius, a bit more velocity out of defensive loads, and a full length ejector stroke that kicks empties clear more cleanly on reloads. At around 24 ounces of all stainless construction, this one carries enough weight to tame recoil noticeably better than the airweight guns, especially with .38 Special +P. And since it is chambered in .357 Magnum, you can run .38 Special, .38 +P, or full house magnums depending on what you shoot best. Plenty of folks practice with soft shooting .38s and carry something warmer, and this gun is built for exactly that.

Built for the Snubby Life

The bead blasted matte stainless finish shrugs off sweat and holster wear, and the rubber grips with finger grooves and a serrated backstrap keep the gun planted in your hand. Sights are a removable serrated blade up front with a fixed notch rear, simple and durable with nothing to break or snag. The shrouded ejector rod and rounded edges keep the whole package smooth for the draw. Better yet, the five shot cylinder shares its footprint with the Taurus 605, so speedloaders and holsters made for small frame five shot .357s are easy to come by. It is backed by the Taurus lifetime repair policy, and for a do-it-all carry wheelgun, this one is tough to argue with.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the Taurus 650 shoot .38 Special ammo?

Yes. Since it is chambered in .357 Magnum, the 650 also handles .38 Special and .38 Special +P without any issue. A lot of owners practice with mild .38s to keep range sessions comfortable and load +P or magnum ammo for carry.

What is the advantage of the 3 inch barrel over the 2 inch Taurus 650?

The 3 inch barrel gives you a longer sight radius for easier aiming, a bit more velocity from defensive loads, and a longer ejector stroke that clears spent cases more fully on reloads. It adds only a small amount of length and weight, so it still conceals well in a belt holster. Many revolver folks consider the 3 inch snub the sweet spot for carry.

Will holsters and speedloaders for other small frame revolvers fit the 650?

In most cases, yes. The 650 shares its cylinder footprint with the Taurus 605, so speedloaders and holsters designed for small frame, five shot .357 Magnum revolvers generally work. The frame is close in size to a J-frame, so many holsters in that category fit as well, though grips are not interchangeable without modification.

Does the Taurus 650 have an exposed hammer for single action shooting?

No, the hammer is fully enclosed inside the frame, so the 650 is double action only. That means one long, consistent trigger pull for every shot and nothing on top of the gun to snag on clothing during the draw. It is a proven setup for concealed carry and backup revolvers.
