The TacFire BU-308-7 takes the hard-hitting .308 Winchester cartridge and packs it into a short, pistol-length upper that's built to bolt right onto a DPMS-pattern AR-10 lower. This is a fully assembled unit, not a box of loose parts, so you get the receiver, barrel, handguard, and internals already fitted and ready to mate up with your lower.
The 7 inch barrel wears a black nitride finish, a treatment that holds up well against corrosion and everyday wear while giving the metal a slicker surface for smoother cycling. A pistol length direct impingement gas system keeps the whole package compact, though it's worth knowing that dumping .308 pressure through a barrel this short means you'll get a noticeably sharp report and a good amount of muzzle flash. That's just physics at play with a short barrel and a big cartridge, and it's part of the tradeoff for the compact footprint.
The upper receiver is machined from 7075-T6 aluminum and finished in a durable black anodized coating that matches most other DPMS-pattern parts on the market. A free float M-LOK handguard wraps the barrel without touching it, so you can hang a light, grip, or sling mount without throwing off your point of impact. A full length Picatinny rail runs the top of the receiver, giving you plenty of real estate for an optic or back-up irons.
This upper ships with a bolt carrier group already included, so the heavy lifting on the internals is done for you. Since it follows the DPMS Gen 1 pattern rather than Armalite spec, it's built to work with the majority of AR-10 style lowers on the market that follow that same footprint, though it's always smart to double check your specific lower before ordering if you're not sure which pattern it follows.
This upper follows the DPMS Gen 1 pattern, which is the most common footprint for AR-10 style lowers, so it should fit most lowers built to that spec. It is not built to Armalite spec, so if your lower follows that pattern instead, it won't line up correctly. If you're unsure which pattern your lower uses, it's worth checking with the lower's manufacturer before you order.
Yes, this upper comes with both a bolt carrier group and a charging handle already in place. You won't need to source those parts separately to get it running once it's mounted on a lower.
A pistol length gas system cycles faster and with more pressure than the mid-length or rifle length systems found on longer .308 uppers, which means a bit more felt recoil and a snappier cycling action. It's also going to be considerably louder and produce more muzzle flash than a 16 inch or longer barrel, simply because the .308 round doesn't get as much barrel time to burn powder efficiently. That tradeoff is what gets you the compact, maneuverable package this upper is built around.
Since a barrel this short sacrifices some velocity compared to longer .308 barrels, factory loads on the lighter end of the bullet weight spectrum tend to perform more consistently and cycle more reliably. Heavier bonded or match style bullets designed for longer barrels may not reach their intended velocity window out of a 7 inch tube. It's a good idea to pattern a few different loads through yours once it's built to see what runs cleanest.
