The Shield Plus took everything people loved about the original Shield and fixed the one complaint everybody had: capacity. This Optics Ready version with the manual thumb safety gives you 13+1 rounds of 9mm with the extended magazine, or 10+1 with the flush-fit mag when deep concealment matters more. That is real firepower from a pistol that measures just 6.1 inches long with a 3.1 inch barrel, and it still fits most holsters made for the original Shield.
The flat-face trigger is a genuine upgrade over the older Shield design. It gives you consistent finger placement, a cleaner break, and a short, tactile reset that makes fast follow-up shots easier at the range. The grip texture is aggressive enough to stay planted during recoil without chewing up your side during a long day of carry, and the 18-degree grip angle points naturally when you present the pistol. Smith & Wesson's Armornite finish on the stainless steel barrel and slide shrugs off sweat and holster wear, which matters a lot on a gun that lives against your body.
The slide comes cut for micro red dots, so you can mount a compact optic without sending anything off to a machinist. Even if you never add a dot, you're covered. This model ships with tritium night sights, an orange ring front and blacked-out rear, that give you a fast, clean sight picture in low light. Plenty of pistols make you choose between an optic cut and quality irons. This one hands you both.
The manual thumb safety on this model is low-profile and easy to sweep off on the draw, and a lot of folks who carry appendix or grew up on 1911s appreciate having it there. Add in the take-down system that lets you field strip without pulling the trigger, and this Shield Plus is a thoughtful, well-rounded carry package from a company that has been building M&P pistols people trust for two decades.
The slide is cut for the RMSc footprint, which covers most popular micro red dots including the Holosun 407K and 507K series, Shield RMSc, and similar compact optics. Mounting is straightforward: remove the cover plate, seat the optic, and torque the screws to spec. The tritium night sights stay on the gun, so you have backup irons even with a dot mounted.
In most cases, yes. Smith & Wesson kept the Shield Plus dimensions very close to the original Shield and Shield M2.0, so the majority of existing Shield holsters work fine. Just note that this thumb safety model may not fit holsters molded specifically for non-safety versions, and adding an optic can affect fit with some rigs.
It is a low-profile lever positioned right where your thumb naturally rides, and sweeping it off becomes second nature with a little practice on the draw. It is stiff enough that it will not flip on or off accidentally in the holster. If you train with it consistently, it adds a layer of security without slowing you down.
