The Model 629 has been the go-to .44 Magnum for handgun hunters for decades, and the Performance Center Stealth Hunter is what happens when S&W's master gunsmiths get their hands on one. Instead of the classic bright stainless, the whole gun wears a matte black finish over its stainless steel frame, cylinder, and barrel. It looks the part in the deer woods and cuts down on glare when the sun hits it at the wrong angle. Underneath that finish is the same rugged large-frame platform that has been stopping big game since the .44 Mag was king.
The headline feature is the 7.5 inch magna-ported barrel. Those ports vent gas upward at the muzzle, which knocks down muzzle flip noticeably with full-power magnum loads and gets your sights back on target faster for follow-up shots. Pair that with the gun's 55 ounce heft and stout .44 Mag loads become genuinely manageable, while .44 Special feels downright pleasant for practice sessions. The action gets the full Performance Center treatment too: a hand-tuned lockwork, a PC trigger with an overtravel stop, and ball detent lock-up for a tight, consistent cylinder-to-barrel relationship. The single action break is crisp, and the double action pull is smoother than anything coming off a standard production line.
Up front you get a drift adjustable dovetail red ramp sight that stands out well against fur and brush, matched with a fully adjustable black blade rear so you can dial in your hunting load exactly. The frame is drilled and tapped, so mounting a red dot or a handgun scope for longer shots is straightforward. Synthetic grips soak up recoil and keep their footing when your hands are cold or wet.
