This version comes out of S&W's Performance Center, where the action gets hand tuning for a smoother, cleaner pull. It also features a chrome-flashed teardrop hammer, a chrome-flashed trigger with an overtravel stop, and a distinctive unfluted cylinder you will not find on the standard production gun.
It is, as long as you understand the tradeoff. You give up some velocity and sight radius compared to a longer barrel, but you gain a package that is genuinely comfortable to carry on a belt or chest rig. Full-house .44 Magnum out of a short barrel is stout, no way around it, but the nearly 40 ounce all-steel frame absorbs a lot more of it than lighter guns in this class. The wood grips give you a good purchase, and practicing with .44 Special makes building skill a lot more pleasant.
