Full-house .357 Magnum out of a 3 inch barrel is normally a handful. The L-Comp's ported full lug barrel vents gas upward to fight muzzle rise while the extra weight of the full underlug soaks up recoil, so follow-up shots come back on target noticeably faster. When you want a lighter day at the range, it runs .38 Special just as happily. Up top you get a tritium front night sight paired with an adjustable black blade rear, a smart combination that gives you a glowing reference in low light and the ability to dial in your preferred load.
At roughly 36 ounces with an 8 inch overall length, this is a carbon steel L-frame that carries the weight where it helps, out front over the muzzle. Yes. Like any revolver chambered in .357 Magnum, the 586 L-Comp also runs .38 Special and .38 +P without any changes. A lot of owners practice with softer .38 loads and keep magnums in it the rest of the time, which is a smart way to build skill without beating yourself up.
The cylinder is machined for moon clips and Smith & Wesson ships the revolver with them. They speed up reloads and make picking up empties a breeze, but they are completely optional. Rounds load, fire, and eject normally without a clip since the rimmed cases headspace on their own.
Quite a bit, especially combined with the full lug barrel and the gun's roughly 36 ounce heft. The ports vent gas upward at the muzzle to cut flip, so the front sight settles back faster between shots. Full-power magnums are still stout out of a 3 inch barrel, but this setup makes them far more controllable than a standard snub.
It can be, if you are comfortable carrying a steel L-frame. The 3 inch barrel and rounded boot grips keep the package compact for its class, and the tritium front sight is genuinely useful in low light. A quality belt and holster make the weight a non-issue for most folks, and seven rounds of .357 is serious peace of mind.
