When S&W built this thing they had to invent a new designation for it, XVR, short for X-treme Velocity Revolver, because nothing else in the catalog came close. Chambered in .460 S&W Magnum with a 14 inch barrel, it launches 200 grain bullets at over 2,300 feet per second, the highest muzzle velocity of any production revolver made. That flat trajectory is what turns this from a range curiosity into a genuine 200 yard hunting handgun.

What Makes the 460XVR Hunter Different

The long fluted barrel uses gain-twist rifling, meaning the twist rate speeds up as the bullet travels down the bore, which helps wring accuracy out of that big case at extended range. An effective muzzle brake takes real bite out of recoil, and at 5.5 pounds the X-frame itself soaks up plenty on its own. The Performance Center touches are where this one earns its keep: a tuned action, chrome hammer, and chrome trigger with an adjustable trigger stop give you a crisp single action break that does the accuracy justice. A black ramp front sight pairs with a fully adjustable rear, and the satin stainless frame, cylinder, and barrel shrug off weather in the field.

Set Up for the Field Right Out of the Box

Smith & Wesson ships this one with a bipod that mounts up front, so you can settle in over a bench or a shooting position and take full advantage of the long sight radius. A Performance Center gun rug is included to keep it protected in transit. The finger grooved synthetic grip helps you hang on when the hammer drops on full house magnum loads.
