Most pump shotguns make you pick between capacity and maneuverability. The M&P12 skips that trade-off entirely. By moving the action behind the trigger in a bullpup layout, Smith & Wesson fit a 19 inch barrel into a package that measures just 27.8 inches from end to end. That's shorter than a lot of youth guns, yet it holds 14 rounds of 2-3/4 inch shells or 12 rounds of 3 inch magnums across its twin magazine tubes, plus one in the chamber.
The dual magazine tube setup is what really sets the M&P12 apart from anything else in the pump gun aisle. Each tube feeds independently, and a push-button selector lets you jump between them without breaking your grip. Load one tube with buckshot and the other with something lighter, and you can pick your medicine on the fly. Load assist buttons on each tube take the fight out of stuffing shells in, and the 3 inch chamber happily runs standard 2-3/4 inch loads, 3 inch magnums, and mini-shells, so you've got plenty of options at the ammo counter.
Smith & Wesson carried over the familiar M&P pistol grip, complete with four interchangeable palmswell inserts so you can dial in the fit for your hand. The safety selector is fully ambidextrous, there's a tactile loaded chamber indicator you can check in the dark, and a reciprocating cover with a release button makes clearing a damaged shell straightforward. Up top, a full-length Picatinny rail is ready for a red dot or iron sights, while M-LOK slots on the barrel shroud give you real estate for a light.
The 19 inch barrel is threaded for Rem Choke pattern tubes, and cylinder and modified chokes come in the box along with a wrench, a cable lock, and a foam-lined hard case. At 8.3 pounds it carries some heft, which works in your favor when you're soaking up 12 gauge recoil. For a home defense shotgun that keeps a lot of shells on tap in a short, shoulder-friendly package, this one is tough to beat.
Each of the two magazine tubes holds 7 rounds of 2-3/4 inch shells or 6 rounds of 3 inch magnums. That works out to 14+1 with standard shells or 12+1 with magnums. Running mini-shells bumps the on-board count even higher.
Yes, and it's one of the few pump guns designed with mini-shells in mind from the start. Smith & Wesson built the action to cycle 2-3/4 inch, 3 inch magnum, and mini-shell loads without any adapters. As with any shotgun, it's smart to pattern and function-test your chosen load before relying on it.
It is. The safety selector, magazine tube selector, and controls are fully ambidextrous, and there's a QD push-button sling base on the buttstock that works from either side. Lefties can run this gun without any workarounds.
No sights or optic are included. The full-length Picatinny rail on top makes mounting a red dot, holographic sight, or clamp-on irons quick and easy. Most owners pair it with a compact red dot given its close-range defensive role.
