Capacity is the headline here: 22+1 on board, and this model ships with two 22-round magazines. The 5 inch barrel comes threaded 1/2×28 with a thread protector installed, so a suppressor or muzzle device is a simple swap, and the 1:9 twist wrings good accuracy out of the speedy little cartridge. The slide is cut for optics right from the factory, wears forward and rear serrations, and carries driftable white dot sights in the meantime. A frame-mounted Picatinny rail up front handles lights and lasers. Most M&P pistols use a traditional Browning tilt-barrel action, but the M&P 5.7 uses a gas-operated, locked-breech system with a rotating barrel that does not cam open until the bullet passes the gas port. This handles the high pressure of the 5.7x28mm round safely while directing recoil straight back instead of tilting the barrel. The result is a noticeably flat-shooting pistol with very light felt recoil.
Yes, the 5 inch barrel comes threaded with a standard 1/2×28 pattern and a thread protector installed from the factory. Several ammo makers offer subsonic 5.7x28mm loads for quiet suppressed shooting. Keep in mind that some subsonic loads may need a suppressor attached to cycle the action reliably, which is common for gas-operated pistols in this caliber.
The slide is cut for micro red dot optics right from the factory, so you can mount a compatible reflex sight without sending the slide off for machining. The included driftable white dot sights work fine on their own if you prefer irons. A red dot pairs really well with the flat-shooting nature of the 5.7 cartridge and makes the most of the long sight radius.
This model, MPN 13347, includes a frame-mounted manual thumb safety along with an ambidextrous slide stop and a reversible magazine release. Smith & Wesson also builds in a trigger safety and internal firing pin block. If you prefer no external safety, S&W makes a separate version of the M&P 5.7 without one.
