Some revolvers come and go, and then there's the 686. Smith & Wesson has been building this stainless L-Frame since the early 80s, and the Plus version bumps the cylinder from six rounds to seven without changing what made the gun a legend in the first place. This is the 6-inch model, chambered in .357 Magnum and happy to run .38 Special or .38 +P all day, which keeps practice sessions affordable and pleasant.
The L-Frame was designed specifically for a steady diet of full-house magnum loads, sitting between the lighter K-Frame and the big N-Frame. That means you get a gun beefy enough to shoot .357 all weekend, but not so heavy it feels like a boat anchor. At right around 44 ounces empty, the 686 Plus soaks up recoil noticeably, and the 6-inch barrel plus the synthetic grip make magnum loads far more manageable than what you'd feel out of a snub. The double action pull is smooth and the single action breaks clean and light, which is a big part of why these guns show up at the range so often with a smile behind them.
The long sight radius pays off in real accuracy, and the red ramp front sight paired with the adjustable white outline rear lets you dial in your zero for whatever load you settle on. Yes. Like any .357 Magnum revolver, the 686 Plus safely fires .38 Special and .38 Special +P in addition to full-power .357 Magnum. A lot of owners run affordable .38s for practice and load magnums for hunting or protection, which makes this one of the most flexible handguns you can own.
It's very manageable. At nearly 44 ounces of all-steel construction, the 686 Plus soaks up a lot of the punch, and the 6-inch barrel plus the rubber synthetic grip tame muzzle flip better than shorter, lighter guns. With .38 Specials it's downright soft shooting, which makes it a great gun for newer revolver owners too.
The 6-inch version is one of the more popular picks for it. The long barrel wrings extra velocity out of .357 Magnum loads and gives you a generous sight radius, while the adjustable rear sight lets you zero for your exact hunting load. It's well suited to deer-sized game at reasonable handgun distances and doubles as a solid trail gun.
