Yes. Like all .357 Magnum revolvers, the 686 Plus safely fires .38 Special and .38 Special +P in addition to full-power .357 Magnum. Lots of owners run affordable .38s for practice and keep magnum loads on hand for protection or hunting. Just remember it only works one direction, so never try .357 in a gun chambered for .38 Special only.
That's exactly what the L-frame was designed for. Smith & Wesson developed this frame size specifically for continuous magnum use after smaller K-frames showed wear under heavy .357 shooting. The all stainless construction and beefy forcing cone area mean you can feed it magnums for decades without babying it.
The Plus version gives you one extra round in the same size cylinder, with no meaningful difference in size, weight, or handling. The 686 Plus also uses the round butt grip frame, which accepts a wide variety of aftermarket grips so you can tailor the fit to your hand. For most folks the extra round is a free upgrade with no downside.
It does both well. At around 38.5 ounces it's on the heavier side for all-day carry, but plenty of people tote one in a quality belt holster, especially for woods carry where .357 Magnum earns its keep. That same weight is a real advantage at the range, since it tames magnum recoil and keeps follow-up shots quick and comfortable.
