There are big revolvers, and then there is the Smith & Wesson 460XVR. The XVR stands for X-treme Velocity Revolver, and the name is earned. Built on S&W's massive stainless X-Frame, this wheelgun sends a 200 grain .460 S&W Magnum bullet downrange at over 2,300 feet per second, the highest muzzle velocity of any production revolver made. That flat trajectory is the whole point. Zero it at 200 yards and you can hold center on a deer anywhere from the muzzle out to 250 with no guesswork, which is why handgun hunters keep coming back to this platform year after year.
The 8.38 inch barrel uses gain-twist rifling, meaning the twist rate speeds up as the bullet travels down the bore. Yes, and it's one of the best things about this revolver. Since .454 Casull and .45 Colt are shorter cartridges of the same bullet diameter, the 460XVR handles both safely. That lets you run mild .45 Colt for cheap, comfortable practice and save the full-power magnum loads for hunting.
Less than you'd expect for the cartridge. At 72.5 ounces the sheer weight absorbs a lot of the push, and the included compensator vents gas to knock down muzzle rise. Full magnum loads still get your attention, but most people find it a firm shove rather than a punishing snap, and .45 Colt loads are downright easy.
One is designed for jacketed bullets and the other for lead bullets. Lead projectiles can foul a comp designed for jacketed ammo, so Smith & Wesson includes both and makes them easy to swap. Just match the comp to whatever ammo you're loading that day.
