The SureFire Aviator packs a serious dual-personality punch into a torch small enough to ride in a flight bag, jacket pocket, or truck console. Inside that sealed head sit two separate LEDs: a primary white emitter that throws up to 250 lumens with roughly 190 meters of reach, and a secondary red LED that keeps your night-adapted eyes happy. A proprietary Total Internal Reflection (TIR) lens shapes both into a beam with genuine throw and enough surround light to keep you aware of what's around you.
Instead of clipping a filter over the front, you pull and twist the self-locking selector ring on the bezel to move between white, red, and a system-disable position that keeps the light from firing off in your bag. The shrouded tailcap clicky handles on/off and toggles between high and low output. White runs 250 lumens on high for about an hour and a half, or 5 lumens on low for over 20 hours of runtime. Red gives you 39 lumens on high or a whisper-quiet 1 lumen on low that stretches well past 50 hours.
The red beam is the real draw here. It preserves your night vision and makes red-light-readable topographic maps easy to work with, which is exactly why aviators and folks working in the dark gravitate to it. The two-output setup means you're not blinding yourself for close-up work, then have full brightness ready when you need to see across a hangar or campsite.
The body is machined from aerospace-grade aluminum with a Type III hard-anodized finish that shrugs off scratches and rough handling. O-ring and gasket sealing keeps out water and dust, and the textured housing gives you a solid grip even with gloves on. A stainless steel pocket clip keeps it right where you left it, and it runs on a single CR123A battery that comes in the box. It's proudly made in the USA and backed by SureFire's lifetime warranty.
