Instead of just venting gas upward, this comp works like a counterbalance. As the round fires, the hot gases drive the compensator forward while the slide travels rearward, and that opposing motion helps cancel out felt recoil. The result is a Glock 17 Gen4 that tracks flatter and settles quicker between shots. Plenty of folks who have run one describe the recoil impulse as being closer to a rimfire than a full-power 9mm, which tells you how much of the snap it takes out.
The big draw here is that no threaded barrel is required and there is no permanent work done to your pistol. Everything runs off a special dual-spring guide rod assembly that replaces your factory recoil spring setup. The clever part is that the comp separates from the operating components after ignition, so it keeps your slide cycling at close to stock speed instead of loading it down with extra reciprocating mass like older barrel-mounted comps tend to do. It was also sized to match your slide dimensions, so it sits flush and plays nice with most open-bottom holsters built to clear a compensator.
This is the Standard version built specifically for the 9mm Glock 17 Gen4 and G31, with a 1.41 inch overall length and a machined black aluminum body. Note that it is not cross-compatible with Gen3 pistols. Installation swaps your recoil spring assembly for the included guide rod, springs, and hardware. The new spring runs stiff, so give yourself a few minutes and a little patience getting it compressed and lined up the first time. The upside is that going back to stock is quick if you ever want to. Strike Industries recommends sticking with standard-pressure 9mm. Running +P and +P+ loads regularly can cause premature internal spring wear and lead to failure. For range use and follow-up shot practice, standard 9mm is the way to go.
The mechanical part is simple, you are just swapping the recoil spring assembly. The main challenge is that the included spring runs stiff, so compressing it and lining everything up takes a little patience the first time through. Once you get the hang of it, both installing and reverting to stock go quickly.
