It's a drop-in unit that replaces your factory mag catch and adds a release bar on the left side, so you can drop a magazine with either hand without breaking your firing grip. The whole assembly is machined from 6061 T6 aluminum and wears a black anodized finish that matches most mil-spec builds right out of the bag.
The raised, textured button gives you a little extra leverage and a positive feel when you press it, and the low-profile shape keeps it tucked in so it won't snag or get bumped when you don't mean to. Right-handed folks get more options for mag changes from awkward positions, and left-handed shooters finally get a control that works with them instead of against them. You don't need it, but plenty of right-handed shooters run one anyway. Having a left-side release lets you drop a magazine without breaking your firing grip, which comes in handy during reloads from odd positions or when you want to keep your support hand on the mag well.
