Savage took their workhorse 320 pump and scaled it down with a shortened length of pull of around 12.75 inches, so smaller-framed and youth shooters can mount it properly, reach the forend comfortably, and build good habits from day one. Chambered in 20 gauge with a 3-inch chamber, it delivers plenty of punch for doves, squirrels, rabbits, and clay targets without the shoulder-thumping recoil that turns new shooters off to the sport.
The Field Grade Compact runs on the same action that made the 320 line a favorite budget pump: a rotary bolt paired with dual slide bars that keep the forend from binding mid-stroke. It loads from the bottom, ejects out the side, and feeds from a 5+1 tube magazine. The 22-inch carbon steel barrel wears a ventilated rib with a bead front sight, which helps with a consistent sight picture whether you are breaking clays at the range or swinging on a flushing bird. A modified choke tube comes installed, a solid all-around choice for most field work.
Matte blued metal and a black synthetic stock with a rubber butt pad mean this gun does not mind rain, mud, or riding around in the truck. There is nothing here to baby, which is exactly what you want in a starter shotgun that is going to see real field time.
