Stern Defense put this one together for folks who want to run .45 ACP through their AR platform without piecing together a bunch of mismatched parts. It shows up as a complete, assembled upper group, so you can drop it onto a compatible lower, sort out your buffer, and get to the range. The heart of it is a 6-inch .45 ACP barrel wearing a black Melonite finish, wrapped in an 8-inch MOD5 M-LOK handguard that leaves you plenty of room to hang a light, a sling point, or a hand stop wherever it makes sense for you.
The free-float MOD5 rail is machined from 6061 aircraft-grade aluminum and hard-coat anodized, with a clamp-on mounting system that keeps it locked down even under hard use. The upper receiver itself is a mil-spec flat-top cut from 7075-T6 aluminum, hard-coat anodized, and topped with a laser-engraved dust cover and forward assist. One detail worth calling out: the ejection port is enlarged to clear the fatter .45 ACP case, which is a big part of why these run reliably where a standard port would choke.
Stern includes their Glock-cut SD BU45 bolt, made from 8620 AISI steel with a mag-phosphate finish and a 4140 billet extractor for solid ejection. It feeds from a bottom-feed design that .45 ACP needs to run right, and it plays nice with Colt SMG and Glock-pattern magazines along with standard AR15/M16 charging handles. An enhanced SD CH1 charging handle is part of the package too. The whole thing is built and assembled in the U.S.A.
This is a blowback pistol caliber setup, so buffer weight matters. Stern recommends an 11-ounce buffer or heavier when running a carbine spring, and sticking to their bolt keeps feeding consistent. Match it with a Glock-cut or M&P magazine-fed lower and you've got a compact, hard-hitting .45 that's genuinely fun to shoot.
