Description
Stern Defense put this MOD5 upper together for folks who want a dedicated .45 ACP AR without piecing every part together themselves. It ships assembled and runs as a blowback pistol-caliber setup, feeding from Glock-pattern magazines through Stern's bottom-feed Glock-cut bolt. Pair it with a standard mil-spec AR-15 or M16 lower and the right buffer setup, and you've got a big-bore plinker that eats cheap handgun ammo and hits soft on the shoulder.
The heart of it is a 16.1-inch barrel machined from steel and finished in Black Melonite, which is a nitride treatment that fights corrosion and holds up to a lot of rounds. Up front sits Stern's SD CB45 compensator break to tame muzzle rise, while the free-float 15-inch M-LOK handguard gives you a long stretch of real estate for lights, grips, bipods, or a hand stop. The rail clamps on solid and stays put under hard use, and it's built light so the whole upper handles well.
What Makes This Stern Defense .45 Upper Tick
The assembled receiver is 7075-T6 aluminum, hard-coat anodized, with an enlarged ejection port to clear those fat .45 cases. It comes with a laser-engraved dust cover and forward assist, plus mil-spec dry film lube already in the bore. The included SD BU45 bolt is 8620 steel with a mag-phosphate finish and a custom 4140 billet extractor, and it's cut to work with single-stage triggers that have short resets. It also plays nice with the Law Tactical folding stock.
Getting Your MOD5 45 ACP Upper Running Right
This is a bottom-feed, Glock-cut system, so match it with a compatible Colt-style lower and skip anything nonstandard. Stern does not recommend the JP silent capture spring with .45, since the cartridge can beat up that system, and a good dead-blow style buffer like an H3 keeps bolt bounce in check on full-auto or heavy-use guns. Set it up right and this thing runs clean and reliable. It's a fun, low-cost way to shoot your AR with a caliber that's easy on the wallet and easy on your ears with the comp doing its work.

Frequently Asked Questions
What magazines does the Stern Defense MOD5 .45 ACP upper use?
The included SD BU45 Glock-cut bolt is set up to run Glock-pattern .45 ACP magazines, and it also functions with Colt SMG magazines. If you'd rather run M&P .45 mags, Stern sells a separate MAG-AD conversion adapter for that. The bolt is a bottom-feed design, which is what makes reliable .45 feeding possible in an AR.
Is this a complete upper or do I still need parts to shoot it?
It ships fully assembled with the barrel, handguard, receiver, Glock-cut bolt, charging handle, and compensator all installed. You'll need a compatible mil-spec AR-15 lower and the correct buffer setup for a blowback .45 to complete the gun. Once it's mated to a lower, it's ready to run.
Will the Stern Defense .45 upper work on any AR-15 lower?
It's designed for standard AR-15 and M16 mil-spec upper receivers running Colt-style Glock-cut bolts. Stern specifically warns against Olympic Arms parts and notes that some dedicated PCC lowers, like certain Anderson models, have a nonstandard bolt catch height that can interfere. Stick with a standard mil-spec lower and you're good to go.
Why does the barrel have a Melonite finish?
Black Melonite is a nitride surface treatment that hardens the steel and helps it resist corrosion and wear. It's a durable finish that holds up well to lots of rounds and rough conditions. The bore also comes with mil-spec dry film lube already applied from the factory.
