This RCBS .356 steel neck bushing replaces the fixed expander ball in your sizing die with a precision-engineered solution that lets you dial in exactly the right amount of grip on your bullets. Instead of forcing brass into an oversized opening, you're applying controlled tension that holds your bullet securely while letting the case spring back naturally.
The difference between bushing dies and standard dies comes down to wear. A fixed expander ball works the same regardless of your brass thickness, which means over time you're fatiguing the neck metal unnecessarily. This RCBS bushing solves that problem by letting you match the bushing size to your specific brass. Measure your case neck, subtract the right amount for proper spring-back, and you've got minimal stress on the brass while maintaining the tension you need for consistent bullets.
RCBS engineers these bushings with hardened steel sizing diameters that are hand-polished to a surface hardness of Rc 60-62, reducing sizing effort and wear. The self-centering design ensures your case neck stays aligned properly during sizing, which translates directly to better concentricity in your finished rounds.
The .356 size works for certain cartridges, but RCBS recommends having bushing sizes one to two increments above and below your target diameter on hand. You can determine your correct size by measuring the outside neck diameter of a loaded cartridge and subtracting .002 to .003 inch, which allows about .001 inch of brass to spring back. Alternatively, measure your case neck thickness, multiply by two, add your bullet diameter, and subtract .001 inch. Both methods get you in the ballpark, but measuring your actual brass and loaded ammo gives you the most accurate starting point.
While one bushing will work, RCBS recommends having neck bushings one to two sizes above and below your target diameter. This gives you flexibility to fine-tune tension if your brass thickness varies or if you want to experiment with slightly different neck tensions for different shooting applications. Most reloaders who invest in bushing dies end up building a small collection of sizes.
This bushing is designed for RCBS Gold Medal Match Series and MatchMaster Series reloading dies that feature replaceable neck bushings. It will not work with standard non-bushing dies or dies from other manufacturers like Redding or Hornady, as each manufacturer designs their bushing dimensions to their specific die specifications.
Measure the outside neck diameter of one of your loaded cartridges with calipers, then subtract .002 to .003 inch. The result is your ideal bushing size. Alternatively, measure your case neck wall thickness, multiply by two, add your bullet diameter, and subtract .001 inch. Your actual brass and ammunition will give you the most accurate answer, so measure before ordering.
Yes. Bushing dies apply only the tension you need rather than forcing all cases through the same size opening. This reduces work hardening of the brass, which is the main cause of neck failure.
