What sets bushing sizing apart from standard full-length dies is the ability to adjust neck tension without overworking your brass. Instead of a fixed expander ball, the bushing squeezes your case neck down to a specific diameter you choose. That means tighter control with less brass fatigue, which keeps cases viable for more reloads and maintains better accuracy shot to shot.
The right bushing size depends on your specific brass and how much you want the neck to grip your bullet. To find your target bushing size, measure the outside diameter of a loaded cartridge and subtract .002 to .003 inches, which accounts for the brass to spring back slightly after sizing. You can also calculate it by measuring your case neck wall thickness, doubling it, adding your bullet diameter, then subtracting .001 inch. Most reloaders benefit from having bushings in .001 inch increments around their target size so they can fine-tune their load.
The self-centering design keeps your bushing aligned properly with your case neck, which means more consistent sizing and less runout. When you reduce work hardening by using the right bushing instead of oversizing with a standard die, your brass lasts longer and your loads stay more consistent across multiple firings. This bushing is designed for RCBS Gold Medal Match Series and MatchMaster bushing-style sizing dies. It's not compatible with standard full-length sizing dies that use expander balls. Make sure your die has a bushing cavity before ordering.
Measure the outside diameter of a loaded cartridge with a bullet seated and subtract .002 to .003 inches, accounting for brass spring-back. RCBS recommends having bushings one to two sizes above and below your target size to experiment with neck tension.
RCBS bushings are designed for RCBS Gold Medal Match sizing dies. While some aftermarket dies accept universal bushings, compatibility varies. Check your die specifications before assuming interchange. Hornady, Redding, and Wilson also make bushings, but they may have different dimensions.
A properly fitted bushing sizes only the neck, avoiding unnecessary work-hardening of the brass. This reduces fatigue and lets cases last through more reloads.
