You can also use it for clay target work if that's your thing. Steel shot is harder than lead and can stress older or tightly choked barrels. If your shotgun was made before the mid-1990s or has a fixed full choke, check your manual or contact the manufacturer before using steel. Modern guns rated for steel shot handle it fine. The gun needs to be marked as steel shot compatible to be safe.
The #6 size performs best out to about 40 yards on upland birds with proper shotgun choke. Beyond that, pellet energy drops off. Tighter chokes like modified or full will help pattern better at distance, while open chokes won't hold the pattern as far. Always pattern your gun at the range to see what you can count on.
Many areas require or prefer steel because it's non-toxic and doesn't contaminate soil or water over time. Steel performs nearly as well as lead in modern shotguns when you pick the right load. The tradeoff is that steel is slightly less dense, so this 7/8 ounce load patterns a bit differently than a comparable lead round would.
These rounds work fine for casual clay practice, though many trap and skeet competitors prefer softer-shooting target loads with different shot sizes like #8 or #9. The #6 is wider-patterning than typical target shot, and some ranges have specific ammunition requirements, so check before you shoot.
