The Springfield Armory XD Subcompact is a purpose-built carry gun, and Springfield designed this 16-round extended magazine to match. It is a genuine factory magazine, made to the same specs and tolerances as the one that came in the box with your pistol. When you want more rounds on tap without sacrificing reliability, this is the right answer.
The magazine body is stainless steel, and the internals follow suit with a high-tensile steel spring and polymer follower to keep rounds feeding smoothly and consistently. The X-Tension sleeve is the key to making this work in a subcompact frame. It slides over the lower portion of the magazine and fills the gap between the grip and the baseplate, giving your hand something to grab onto and keeping the mag properly seated. The OD Green color on the X-Tension is easy to distinguish from flush-fit mags in your range bag, which is a small but practical bonus.
This magazine is also compatible with the XD Mod.2 Sub-Compact in 9mm, so if you own both platforms or upgraded from one to the other, your spare mags transfer over. It is a double-stack design and will protrude below the grip, which is worth knowing if you run it in a holster. Many XD Subcompact owners keep one of these loaded as a backup or training mag, and a handful keep it as their primary when conditions allow a little extra grip length.

This magazine is designed for the Springfield Armory XD Subcompact chambered in 9mm. It is also compatible with the XD Mod.2 Sub-Compact in 9mm, as those two platforms share the same magazine geometry. It will not fit XD-M, XD-S, or XDE models, which use different magazine designs.
The X-Tension is a polymer sleeve that slides over the lower portion of the extended magazine and fills the gap between the bottom of the subcompact grip frame and the magazine baseplate. It gives you a proper grip surface and keeps the mag properly seated and aligned during use. Running an extended mag in a subcompact without one can lead to over-insertion and feeding issues, so it is not just cosmetic.
You can run it either way, but the extended grip length that comes with a 16-round mag does add some bulk below the frame. Many XD Subcompact owners prefer the flush-fit magazine for everyday carry and keep this one loaded as a spare or use it at the range where the extra grip surface and capacity are a genuine advantage.
