The TRP name carries real weight in the 1911 world. It started as Springfield Armory's answer to the FBI Hostage Rescue Team's custom Professional pistol, and the idea was simple: take what made that gun great and make it accessible without cutting corners. That DNA is still very much alive in this full-size 5-inch model.
The foundation is a forged carbon steel frame and slide, hand-selected and numbered as a matched pair before the build even begins. The result is a slide-to-frame fit that feels like it was assembled by a gunsmith, not a factory floor. The 5-inch stainless steel match-grade barrel runs a 1:16 twist and is mated to a precision bushing through a two-piece National Match full-length guide rod. Accuracy from this setup is genuinely impressive for a production pistol.
The grip system on the TRP is one of its most talked-about features. You get 20 lines-per-inch checkering cut directly into the frontstrap and mainspring housing, which is something you usually only see on custom builds. VZ Hydra G10 grips are included alongside the standard Cocobolo panels, so you have options out of the box. The Gen 2 Speed Trigger is skeletonized with front serrations and breaks cleanly in the 4.5 to 5 lb range. The ambidextrous thumb safety and high-grip beavertail with memory bump round out the controls package nicely for both right- and left-handed shooters.
The low-profile 3-dot tritium night sights work day or night without snagging on gear, and the flared, blended magwell keeps reloads fast and intuitive. This model ships with Cocobolo wood grip panels installed, and also includes an additional set of G10 grips in the box. The G10 panels offer a more aggressive texture for hard-use or wet-condition shooting, while the Cocobolo give it a more classic look. Having both sets right out of the box is a nice touch that lets you set the gun up the way you want it from day one.
The 20 lines-per-inch checkering on the frontstrap and mainspring housing is the real deal. It's the same spec you'd find on a custom-built competition 1911, and it locks the gun into your hand under any conditions. That said, it can be rough on bare hands during longer shooting sessions, so gloves are worth having if you're running a lot of rounds. The VZ Hydra G10 grips that come with it are similarly grippy but a bit more comfortable to hold for extended use.
Yes, the TRP comes with adjustable tritium night sights. The front sight uses a single tritium vial and the rear features two tritium inserts for a traditional 3-dot picture. They're low-profile and designed not to snag on holsters or gear. Tritium sights glow in low-light conditions without batteries, so you're covered whether you're at a late-night range session or using the gun for home defense.
The all-steel construction at 42 ounces does a solid job soaking up recoil from the .45 ACP chambering. Reviewers consistently describe it as a softer shooter than expected for a full-size .45, largely thanks to the weight of the frame and the secure grip you get from the 20 LPI checkering and G10 panels. Many experienced 1911 owners eventually upgrade to Wilson Combat 47D or similar magazines for maximum reliability, and the TRP's beveled magwell makes dropping and seating magazines fast and smooth regardless of which brand you run.
