The XD Sub-Compact has been around long enough to build a serious track record, and Springfield Armory has kept it in the lineup for good reason. At 6.25 inches overall with a grip width of 1.2 inches, it sits in a sweet spot between true micro-compacts and full-size carry guns. The grip is short enough to disappear under a shirt, but long enough that most shooters can get all four fingers on it without curling a pinky under the mag. That alone makes a real difference during a range session or in a high-stress situation.
The bi-tone finish on this model pairs a black polymer frame with a forged satin stainless steel slide. The barrel is hammer-forged with a Melonite coating, which is the same hard, corrosion-resistant finish you see on much more expensive guns. The fully supported feed ramp and dual-spring recoil system with a full-length guide rod keep the felt recoil surprisingly manageable for a pistol this size. The XD line has always punched above its weight in that department, and this one is no different.
One thing that stands out with the XD is how much passive safety engineering Springfield packed into the design. The grip safety, firing pin block, and the Ultra Safety Assurance trigger system all work together without adding anything to your draw stroke. There's also a striker status indicator on the rear of the slide and a loaded chamber indicator up front, so you can do a fast press-check or a visual confirmation without guessing. The Picatinny rail up front gives you the option to mount a compact weapon light, which is a feature most pistols in this size class skip entirely. The ambidextrous magazine release is a nice touch too, and not something you see consistently at this price point.
The 3-dot white steel sights are simple and functional. They're not going to wow anyone, but they're easy to acquire quickly and they hold up. For serious defensive carry use, they do their job.
Yes, this model (XD9821) ships with two 10-round magazines. Having a spare from the factory is a solid starting point for carry, and additional higher-capacity magazines are available separately from Springfield Armory and aftermarket sources.
The grip safety is a passive feature built into the backstrap of the frame. When you establish a proper firing grip, the safety is automatically depressed and allows the trigger to function normally. If the gun is ever dropped or handled without a full firing grip, the safety remains engaged. It works alongside the firing pin block and trigger safety so nothing adds friction to a normal draw.
At 6.25 inches long with a 1.2-inch grip width, it conceals well in an IWB holster under an untucked shirt for most people. It is a double-stack design, so it is slightly wider than single-stack micro-compacts, but the tradeoff is a grip that most people can get a full four-finger hold on. For many carriers, that extra shootability is worth the marginal difference in width.
Melonite is a ferritic nitrocarburizing surface treatment that hardens the steel and makes it highly resistant to corrosion and wear. It penetrates into the metal rather than just coating the surface, so it holds up well under sustained use and sweaty carry conditions. You'll see the same finish on premium-tier pistols, so its presence here is a genuine quality indicator.
Yes. The 9mm XD Sub-Compact is compatible with Springfield's standard-capacity 13-round flush magazines as well as 16-round extended magazines, both of which are available separately. The 10-round magazines included with this model are the flush-fit style with a slightly shorter profile.
It does. There is a visual and tactile loaded chamber indicator on the top of the slide near the ejection port, so you can confirm a chambered round by sight or touch without having to perform a full press-check. Combined with the striker status indicator on the rear of the slide, you always have a quick read on the condition of the pistol.
