The Scout Squad takes that M14-inspired action and trims the 6-groove carbon steel barrel back to 18 inches, dropping the overall length to about 40.3 inches. The result is a .308 that swings faster, rides easier in a truck or scabbard, and still hits with all the authority the 7.62 NATO cartridge is known for. The 1:11 right-hand twist stabilizes the full range of common .308 loads, so it feeds on affordable surplus-style ammo just as happily as premium hunting rounds.
Everything that makes the standard M1A great is here. You get the crisp two-stage military trigger breaking in the 5 to 6 pound range, a National Match .062 inch front blade, and a military aperture rear sight adjustable for windage and elevation. The forward-mounted scout rail is where this rifle earns its name. Mount a long eye relief scope or a red dot up front and you keep both eyes open for fast target acquisition, all while leaving the iron sights fully usable. The proprietary muzzle brake does a noticeable job taming .308 recoil out of the shorter barrel, keeping follow-up shots quick.

For a do-it-all M1A that hunts, defends, and rings steel, this is the sweet spot for a lot of buyers.
The proprietary brake takes a real bite out of .308 recoil, and combined with the rifle's roughly 8.8 pound weight, it shoots softer than most bolt guns in the same caliber. Muzzle rise stays flat, which makes quick follow-up shots easy. It is louder than a bare muzzle, so ear protection at the range is a must.
