The TRP line has been around since the late 1990s, born out of the FBI Hostage Rescue Team's adoption of the Springfield Professional 1911. The Tactical Response Pistol was built to bring that same level of hand-fitted, high-spec performance into a more accessible package, and it's been a flagship product in Springfield's lineup ever since. The TRP AOS takes that foundation and adds two things people have been asking about for years: a 9mm chambering and optics compatibility.
Every TRP starts with a forged carbon steel frame and slide. Not cast, forged. Springfield hand-selects each pair for slide-to-frame fit and numbers them to keep matched components together throughout the entire build process. The result is a lockup that feels tight and deliberate in a way most production pistols simply don't. The 5-inch match-grade stainless steel barrel rides in a match bushing, and the 20 LPI front strap checkering combined with VZ Hydra G10 grips give you a grip surface that holds through sweat, rain, or whatever else the day throws at you. A two-piece National Match full-length guide rod handles recoil management, and it strips down just like any other 1911.
The Agency Optic System was developed in partnership with Agency Arms and uses interchangeable mounting plates that each incorporate an integrated rear sight. This means you're not sacrificing your irons to run a red dot. The plates are compatible with Trijicon RMR, Shield, Leupold DeltaPoint Pro, and Docter footprints, giving you a solid range of options. The tritium front sight and serrated rear plate co-witness well across most configurations, so you're covered whether you run glass or run irons. The sighting plane serrations on top of the slide reduce glare and help your eye find the sights faster.
The Coyote Brown Cerakote finish isn't just a style choice. Cerakote provides real corrosion resistance and holds up to hard use in a way standard bluing can't. The frame includes a Picatinny accessory rail for lights or lasers, and the ambidextrous thumb safety makes this one usable from either side without any modifications. At 42 ounces unloaded, the all-steel government-size frame soaks up felt recoil in 9mm, making this one of the softer-shooting 1911s you'll put your hands on at this size.

Yes, the pistol ships with a cover plate that includes a black serrated rear sight, and the tritium front sight is always in place. You get a fully functional iron sight setup right out of the box with no optic required. The AOS cut is designed so the rear sight co-witnesses properly whether you're running glass or not.
Both pistols share the AOS optics platform and a similar feature set, but the TRP is Springfield's top-shelf 1911 line. The key difference is in the build process: TRP frames and slides are hand-selected and matched for fit, giving you a tighter, more refined action than the Operator. The TRP also features a match bushing, 20 LPI checkering, and a more polished overall fit and finish that you'd normally associate with custom shop work.
The 5-inch government-size TRP AOS uses a forged carbon steel frame, while the 4.25-inch Carry Contour models use a forged aluminum alloy frame. That steel frame brings the full-size version to 42 ounces unloaded, compared to about 27 ounces for the aluminum-framed Commander model. The added mass of the steel frame is part of what makes the full-size version shoot so softly in 9mm.
The TRP AOS is a Series 70-style design, meaning it does not have a firing pin safety block or the related transfer bar found in Series 80 pistols. Many 1911 enthusiasts prefer this because it typically results in a cleaner, crisper trigger pull without the extra components affecting the feel of the break.
