The bolt carrier group is the beating heart of any AR-15, and Spike's Tactical didn't cut corners on this one. It's a complete, drop-in assembly built to the M16 full-auto profile, which means the carrier carries more mass and a full rear shroud for more consistent cycling and less bolt bounce. Worth clearing up right away: the M16 profile has nothing to do with rate of fire. Dropped into a semi-auto rifle, it stays semi-auto. That heavier carrier just gives you smoother, more dependable timing.
The carrier is machined from 8620 tool steel and the bolt from Carpenter 158 steel, then shot peened, high pressure tested, and magnetic particle inspected so weak spots get caught before the part ever leaves the shop. The gas key is forged, fastened with grade 8 hardware, and properly staked, which is the little detail that keeps a rifle from short-stroking down the road. You also get a mil-spec extractor with a black insert and Viton O-ring for extra tension on ejection.
The nickel boron coating covers the bolt, carrier, and gas key inside and out. It's slicker than hard chrome and considerably slicker than phosphate, so the action cycles with noticeably less drag. Folks who run these tend to say the same thing after making the switch: the difference in how the BCG glides is something you can feel right away, and going back to a plain phosphate bolt just doesn't happen.
Carbon and fouling don't grip the way they do on a parkerized finish, so a shop towel and a quick wipe handle most of the work. The coating is self-lubricating enough that it'll run for a long stretch with minimal oil, which is handy for high-round-count range days. It is. Carbon and fouling don't grab onto the slick coating the way they do on a parkerized bolt, so most of the grime wipes off with a dry shop towel. You'll still want to scrape the bolt tail where hard carbon builds up, but overall cleanup is quicker and lube demands are lower.
