There is something about a walnut stocked bolt gun that never goes out of style, and the Spandau RL leans into that look without getting stuck in the past. Under the checkered Turkish walnut is a 700-compatible short action chambered in .308 Winchester, which means the enormous aftermarket of triggers, bases, stocks, and upgrades built for that platform is open to you from day one. Out of the box, though, this rifle is already set up better than most in its class.
The 20 inch barrel uses 5R rifling with a 1:10 twist, a combo that handles the full range of common .308 bullet weights and tends to be easy on jackets and easy to clean. It comes threaded 5/8×24 with a muzzle brake installed and a thread protector included, so you can run the brake, go bare muzzle, or add your own device without extra work. The push feed action cycles with an oversized bolt handle that is easy to grab with cold hands or gloves, and feeding comes from AICS-pattern detachable magazines. Spandau includes two of them, a 3-rounder and a 5-rounder, which is a nice touch since plenty of rifles ship with just one.
The metalwork wears an oxynitride finish that shrugs off moisture and field wear far better than a traditional blued surface, so the classic looks do not come at the cost of durability. There are no iron sights, but the receiver is drilled and tapped #6-48 and a zero-cant Picatinny rail comes mounted, so you can bolt on a scope and head to the range the same day. The stock carries a 13.97 inch length of pull that fits most adults comfortably.
For a deer rifle, a truck gun, or a starting point for a custom build, the RL covers a lot of ground. You get wood stock character, detachable mags, a threaded barrel, and 700 pattern compatibility in one package, and that is a hard combination to find at this level.
Yes, the RL is built on a 700-compatible short action, so it accepts the huge range of triggers, stocks, chassis, and scope bases made for that pattern. That makes it a great base rifle if you like to upgrade over time. As with any 700 clone, minor fitting can occasionally be needed with certain aftermarket parts, but overall compatibility is the whole point of this design.
It feeds from AICS-pattern detachable magazines, one of the most widely available short action mag standards out there. Spandau ships two in the box, a 3-round and a 5-round, so you are covered for the field and the bench right away. Aftermarket AICS mags from other makers will work too.
The muzzle is threaded 5/8×24, which is the standard thread pitch for .30 caliber suppressors and muzzle devices. Just remove the factory muzzle brake and spin on your can. A thread protector is also included if you prefer to run the barrel clean.
There are no iron sights and no scope included, but it comes optics ready. The receiver is drilled and tapped #6-48 and a zero-cant Picatinny rail is already mounted, so all you need is rings and the glass of your choice.
