This version is cut for a .750-inch barrel journal, which covers the vast majority of standard AR-15 barrels out there. It sits low and slim, so it slides right under most free-float handguards without any clearance headaches. That low-profile shape is what lets you run a longer rail and still keep the whole gas system tucked out of sight.
SOLGW uses hardened steel with a nitrided finish, and that combo is the real story here. The nitride treatment bumps up surface hardness and adds corrosion resistance right where it counts, on a part that lives in constant contact with hot propellant gas and carbon fouling. The material is chosen to match the thermal properties of a chromoly vanadium barrel, so the block and barrel expand and contract in step during long strings of fire.
It uses the set screw method of retention and ships with knurled set screws, which bite into the barrel far better than plain cup-point hardware. For the most secure hold, dimple your barrel where the rear screw seats, degrease the threads, add a drop of red threadlocker, and torque the screws down. The block is designed to ride directly against the gas journal shoulder with no gap, which helps it stay put and keeps your gas port lined up. Do it right once and it should give you a lifetime of reliable service, whether you are running suppressed or unsuppressed.
