Smith & Wesson built the AXE line around one idea: an AR that runs right with a suppressor attached, straight from the factory. The M&P15 AXE Pistol in .300 Blackout takes that idea to its natural home. This is the cartridge people suppress more than any other, and an 8 inch barrel is right in its sweet spot. The heart of the gun is Gemtech's GVAC gas system, a direct impingement setup with an expansion chamber built into the gas block that stores excess gas and vents it forward out the muzzle instead of dumping it back through the charging handle and into your face. Less blowback, less carbon in your eyes, and no fiddling with an adjustable gas block between loads.
The barrel is 8 inches of 4150 chrome moly vanadium steel with 5R rifling, an Armornite finish, and a quick 1:7.5 twist that stabilizes heavy 220 grain subsonic loads as happily as it handles lighter supersonic ammo. Muzzle threads are the standard 5/8×24 with a thread protector installed, so most .300 BLK cans spin right on. Around that barrel, Smith & Wesson skipped the parts-bin approach and installed gear people usually buy separately: a 7 inch Midwest Industries Combat M-LOK free-float handguard, a Radian Raptor ambidextrous charging handle, an enhanced bolt carrier group, and a flat-faced trigger.
The controls are fully ambidextrous, the grip uses interchangeable backstraps so you can fit it to your hand, and the Magpul BTR brace rides on the rear. A hardcoat anodized aluminum receiver with a Picatinny top rail gives you a clean platform for the optic of your choice, since the pistol ships without sights. Capacity is 30+1 from the included magazine. Whether you want a compact truck gun, a quiet range setup, or a home defense rig that will not rattle your ears, this AXE checks the boxes without an immediate trip to the parts catalog.
Not at all, it runs fine unsuppressed. The Gemtech GVAC gas system is designed to shine with a can attached by venting excess gas forward instead of back at you, but it works as a standard direct impingement gun either way. The 5/8×24 threaded muzzle just makes adding a suppressor easy whenever you're ready.
That's exactly what it was built for. The 8 inch barrel with a fast 1:7.5 twist stabilizes heavy 220 grain subsonic bullets, and the GVAC gas system is set up to handle both subsonic and supersonic loads without an adjustable gas block to tinker with. As with any .300 BLK gun, some unsuppressed subsonic loads can be finicky, so test your preferred ammo.
No, the pistol version ships without sights. The flat-top receiver has a full-length Picatinny rail, so you can mount a red dot, LPVO, or backup irons of your choice. Most buyers in this category run a red dot, which pairs nicely with a compact .300 BLK build like this.
The AXE line comes upgraded from the factory with parts most folks add later: a Radian Raptor ambidextrous charging handle, Midwest Industries free-float M-LOK handguard, flat-faced trigger, enhanced bolt carrier group, and fully ambidextrous controls. The biggest difference is the Gemtech GVAC gas block, which uses an expansion chamber to reduce gas blowback during suppressed fire. It's also the first AXE model chambered in something other than 5.56.
