The Safariland Species is a minimalist IWB holster that brings the company's reputation for quality duty gear to the civilian concealed carry market. What you get is a slim, comfortable rig that doesn't sacrifice functionality for its compact footprint.
The SafariLaminate construction is the real standout here. It's a thermal-molded polymer that feels solid in hand while staying thin enough that it won't create a printing bulge under most clothing. The interior is lined with suede, which does something most IWB holsters skip entirely: it protects your gun's finish while holding it a touch tighter than standard kydex or polymer. You'll also notice your draw and reholster are quiet, no noisy clicks or scrapes.
The Species uses an integrated retention system with an adjustable tension screw positioned below the trigger guard. The screw is recessed slightly so it won't snag on your pants, but you can slip an Allen wrench in easily to personalize how tight or loose your gun sits. This is thoughtful design that lets you dial in comfort and retention without overcomplicating things.
This holster is cut for common slide-mounted red dots including the Romeo Zero, RMR CC, Shield RMS, Swampfox Sentinel, and Holosun 407K and 507K models. The belt clip is cant and ride-height adjustable, working with belts up to 1.5 inches wide. Whether you run appendix carry, strongside, or somewhere in between, the clip rotates and adjusts to fit your carry style without tools.
Yes. While the Species is primarily designed for appendix carry, it works well in strong-side positions too. The cant and height-adjustable belt clip lets you rotate it to match whatever carry position feels natural for you. Some carry it strong-side most of the time and find it comfortable and concealable.
The Species is cut for slide-mounted red dots including the Romeo Zero, RMR CC, Shield RMS, Shield RMS-C, Swampfox Sentinel, Hex Wasp, Holosun 407K, Holosun 507K, J-point, and Crimson Trace 1550. If your optic is similar in size and mounting pattern to these models, it should work fine.
There's a tension adjustment screw located below the trigger guard. Use the included Allen wrench to turn it clockwise to increase retention or counterclockwise to loosen it. The screw is recessed so it won't snag on your clothing. You only need a wrench for adjustment; no tools are required for normal carry.
No, the Species is a minimalist design without accommodation for weapon-mounted lights. It also doesn't include a magazine caddy. If you need these features, Safariland makes other IWB options like the Incog X that offer more customization and accessories.
