The Seekins Precision Enhanced Bolt Catch is one of those small upgrades that you notice every single time you run your rifle. Where a standard mil-spec catch gives you a small, slick paddle that's easy to miss with gloves on or in a hurry, this one runs an oversized profile with an aggressive diamond texture across the top. That means your thumb finds it fast and stays put, so bolt release after a reload is quick and positive instead of a game of poke-and-hope.
What a lot of folks overlook is the bottom of the catch. Seekins enlarged and textured that lower section too, which makes manually locking the bolt to the rear noticeably easier. If you've ever wrestled with a stiff factory catch trying to hold the bolt back one-handed, you'll appreciate the extra real estate and grip here.
This version is built using a metal injection molded (MIM) process with a proprietary alloy that Seekins says runs stronger than their original billet part or a standard mil-spec catch. It's finished in the company's ArmorBlak coating rather than the older Melonite. The upside there is that ArmorBlak doesn't mess with the part's heat treatment, so you get greater strength and less visible wear over the long haul. Users consistently point out the fit and finish being flawless and note it holds the bolt back better than a stock catch.
Installation is a true drop-in job for any AR-15 mil-spec lower receiver. It uses your existing bolt catch spring, plunger, and roll pin, so a roll pin punch and a little patience are all you really need. Worth knowing before you order: because of the larger paddle, it may not clear every billet receiver, so double-check clearance if you're running a chunkier billet lower. It's designed for the AR-15 platform and is not made for AR-10 style rifles. For a lot of builders this ends up being a part that goes on every rifle they put together.
It's designed as a drop-in replacement for any AR-15 mil-spec lower receiver and reuses your existing spring, plunger, and roll pin. One thing to keep in mind is that the larger paddle may not clear certain billet receivers, so it's smart to verify clearance if your lower is a heavier billet design. It is not compatible with the AR-10 platform.
The main differences are size and grip. This catch has an oversized profile with aggressive diamond texturing on both the top paddle and the bottom section, so releasing the bolt and locking it to the rear are both faster and more positive. Builders often mention it feels far better under the thumb than a plain factory catch, especially with gloves on.
Current production uses Seekins' ArmorBlak coating rather than the older Melonite finish. ArmorBlak was chosen because it doesn't affect the heat treatment of the steel, which translates to greater strength and less visible wear over time. It also gives the part a clean, durable black finish.
Nothing exotic. A roll pin punch and a way to steady the receiver make the job much easier, since you're driving out the factory roll pin and reinstalling it with the new catch. Take your time capturing the spring and plunger and it's a straightforward bench install.
