There is a lot to like about a plain-working .308 that just does its job, and that is exactly the lane the Stevens Model 334 runs in. This camo version wears a synthetic stock dipped in Mossy Oak Elements Terra Gila over a dark gray Cerakote barreled action, so it shrugs off rain, mud, and truck-bed scratches better than a blued and walnut rifle ever will. The 20 inch carbon steel barrel is free-floated and button rifled with an 11 degree target crown, and it keeps overall length right around 41 inches, which is a real advantage when you are threading through brush or swinging inside a box blind.
The action is the sleeper feature here. A three-lug bolt gives you a short 60 degree lift, so you can cycle fast without smacking your knuckles into a low-mounted scope. A three-position top tang safety sits right under your thumb, letting you unload with the safety still engaged. Feeding comes from a detachable three-round box magazine, and the carbon steel receiver has an integrated recoil lug for a solid bedding platform. At 7.2 pounds bare, it carries fine all day and still has enough heft to soak up .308 recoil, helped along by a soft factory recoil pad.
There are no iron sights, and that is by design. The receiver is drilled and tapped on Savage 110 spacing and comes with a steel MIL-STD 1913 Picatinny rail, so mounting your favorite hunting scope takes minutes with common rings. Sling swivel studs are already installed front and rear. Chambered in .308 Winchester, ammo is everywhere and bullet options run from varmint loads to heavy game bullets, making this an easy pick for a first deer rifle or a beater rig you will not baby.
No iron sights or scope are included. The receiver is drilled and tapped on Savage 110 spacing and ships with a steel Picatinny rail, so all you need is a set of standard Picatinny rings and the optic of your choice. Most folks have a scope mounted and bore sighted in under a half hour.
The three-lug bolt design shortens the lift compared to a traditional two-lug action, which does two things for you. It gives extra clearance between your hand and the scope's ocular bell, and it makes cycling for a follow-up shot quicker and smoother. Once you run one, a 90 degree bolt feels slow by comparison.
For the vast majority of big game hunting, yes. The .308 Winchester loses very little practical performance stepping down from 22 to 20 inches, and the shorter tube keeps the rifle around 41 inches overall, which handles noticeably better in blinds, tree stands, and thick timber. Inside 300 yards, a deer will never know the difference.
The 334 is sold and backed by Savage Arms under their Stevens brand, and it uses Savage 110 scope base spacing, though it is its own action design rather than a 110 variant. It is built overseas to Savage's specs as their value-priced bolt gun line. Warranty and support run through Savage.
