The .17 HM2 is one of those cartridges that never got the spotlight it deserves. It pushes a 17-grain V-Max around 2,100 fps, shoots flat way past typical .22 LR distances, and does it with almost no recoil and a report mild enough that you can shoot all afternoon without wearing ear fatigue. Savage built the Mark II FV to get the most out of it, starting with a 21-inch heavy contour carbon steel barrel that is button rifled with a 1:9 twist and finished in satin blue. That extra barrel weight settles the rifle down on bags or sticks, and the target crown protects the last bit of rifling where accuracy lives.
The user-adjustable AccuTrigger is a big part of why Savage rimfires punch above their weight. You can tune the pull yourself at home, no gunsmith trip required, and the break is crisp and clean right out of the box. Pair that with the stiff barrel and this rifle rewards good fundamentals with tight little groups.
The matte black synthetic stock shrugs off weather and truck rides, with cut checkering at the grip and forend plus swivel studs already in place for a sling or bipod. The receiver is drilled and tapped with two-piece Weaver-style bases installed from the factory, so mounting a scope takes minutes. There are no iron sights, and that is by design, since a cartridge this flat-shooting deserves glass on top.
A 5-round detachable box magazine keeps reloads quick, and the thumb-operated safety sits right where you expect it. At 39.75 inches overall and around 6 pounds, it carries fine for a walk through the squirrel woods but has enough heft to hold steady on prairie dogs at the far end of the pasture. For small game, varmint control, or just ringing steel on a lazy Saturday, this is a whole lot of rifle in a compact rimfire package.
No iron sights and no scope are included. The receiver comes drilled and tapped with two-piece Weaver-style bases already installed, so all you need is a set of rings and the optic of your choice. Most owners top these with a 3-9x or similar rimfire scope and are on paper in one range trip.
