The Savage Mark I GY takes that time-tested formula and shrinks it to fit a young shooter, with a shortened length of pull, a 37 inch overall length, and a carry weight right around 5 pounds. It shoulders naturally for kids and smaller adults instead of forcing them to stretch for a full-size stock.
The big one is the AccuTrigger. Most budget rimfires ship with heavy, gritty triggers that teach bad habits from day one. Savage puts its user-adjustable AccuTrigger on this rifle, so you can dial in a clean, light pull without a trip to the gunsmith, and the blade safety design keeps it from firing if the rifle gets bumped or dropped. Pair that with a 19 inch button-rifled carbon steel barrel in a 1:16 twist and this little rifle will stack shots on tin cans and paper well beyond what its price class suggests.
Savage didn't cheap out on the furniture either. The walnut-stained hardwood stock wears a high-luster finish and a Monte Carlo comb that lines the eye up nicely with the sights. Speaking of sights, you get a bead post up front and an adjustable notched rear, and the receiver is drilled and tapped if you'd rather mount a scope down the road. Swivel studs come installed for a sling when it's time for squirrel woods duty.

It also uses a center blade safety that prevents the rifle from firing if it's jarred or dropped, which is a nice bit of insurance on a trainer that's going to see a lot of hands-on learning.
The GY is built with a shortened length of pull, roughly 12.5 to 13 inches, and a 37 inch overall length. That fits most kids and smaller-framed adults comfortably. It's short enough for a young shooter to get a proper cheek weld on the Monte Carlo comb without stretching for the trigger.
A single-shot forces a deliberate pace since every round gets loaded by hand, which keeps a new shooter thinking about each shot instead of running through a magazine.
