Savage took a hard look at the original Impulse, heard the feedback about weight, and answered with the Mountain Hunter. The big change is up front: a 22-inch Proof Research carbon fiber wrapped stainless steel barrel that trims real ounces off the rifle without giving up rigidity or accuracy. At around 7.3 pounds bare, this is a magnum-caliber rig you can carry up a ridgeline all day and still hold steady when a bull steps out at distance. The muzzle comes threaded 5/8-24 with a brake installed, which takes a noticeable bite out of the 7mm PRC's recoil.
Instead of the traditional lift-pull-push-drop bolt cycle, the Impulse action runs straight back and straight forward. That means faster follow-up shots and less movement behind the scope, which is a genuine advantage when an animal is moving and you need a second round in the chamber now. The bolt handle is removable and can be swapped to either side, and the two-position tang safety sits right under your thumb no matter which shoulder you shoot from. Feeding comes from a detachable box magazine that holds two rounds of 7mm PRC.
The gray AccuStock uses AccuFit inserts to adjust both length of pull and comb height, so you can dial the fit to your frame and your scope height instead of adapting yourself to the rifle. Aluminum bedding runs through the stock in three dimensions to keep the action locked in place shot after shot, and textured grip panels on the forend and pistol grip give you purchase with cold or wet hands. Up top, the aluminum receiver wears an integral one-piece 20 MOA rail, giving long-range hunters extra elevation for stretching the 7mm PRC out where it shines. Add the user-adjustable AccuTrigger, tunable from 1.5 to 4 pounds, and you have a purpose-built mountain rifle that earns its name.
The bolt cycles straight back and forward with no lifting of the handle, using Savage's Hexlock system with hardened bearings that lock into the barrel extension. The practical benefit is speed: you can run the bolt without breaking your cheek weld or coming off target, which makes follow-up shots quicker than a traditional bolt gun. The bolt handle is also removable and can be mounted on either side for lefties.
That's the whole point of this model. The Proof Research carbon fiber wrapped barrel drops the weight to about 7.34 pounds bare, a big improvement over the original Impulse. It carries well on long climbs but still has enough heft to settle down for a steady shot at distance.
Current production ships with a muzzle brake installed on the 5/8-24 threaded muzzle. The brake does a nice job taming the 7mm PRC's recoil, and if you'd rather run a suppressor, the standard thread pitch makes swapping easy.
The aluminum receiver features an integral one-piece 20 MOA Picatinny rail machined right in, so there are no bases to buy or align. The built-in cant gives you extra elevation travel, which pairs well with the 7mm PRC for long-range work. Just add rings and your scope of choice and you're set.
