Savage built this one around their straight-pull Impulse action, which lets you cycle rounds with a quick pull and push of the bolt without breaking your cheek weld or losing your sight picture. When a bull hangs up at the edge of the timber and you need a fast second shot, that matters more than most spec sheet numbers ever will.
The 24 inch barrel is a Proof Research carbon fiber wrapped stainless steel tube, which trims serious ounces off the front end while keeping the stiffness that consistent accuracy depends on. It comes threaded 5/8×24 with a muzzle brake installed, so the 7mm Rem Mag stays manageable off a pack or improvised rest. A 1:9 twist handles the heavier bullets this cartridge does its best work with, and at roughly 7.3 pounds bare, the whole package carries like a rifle that was planned around long approaches and thin air.
The gray AccuStock uses an aluminum spine bedded the full length of the action, so point of impact stays put whether you are shooting off a bipod, a pack, or field positions. AccuFit inserts let you adjust comb height and length of pull to match your build and your scope height, and the user-adjustable AccuTrigger breaks clean without creep. The receiver wears a one-piece 20 MOA rail out of the box, giving you extra elevation for stretching the 7mm Rem Mag to its practical limits, and the bolt handle can be swapped to either side for left-handed hunters or personal preference.
Feeding comes from a flush-fit detachable box magazine for a 3+1 capacity, with nothing hanging below the stock line to snag on brush or a scabbard. Between the carbon fiber barrel, tang safety, and the fastest cycling action Savage makes, this is a legitimate do-it-all mountain rig for elk, mule deer, and anything else that lives where the roads end.
The Impulse uses a straight-pull action, so cycling is a single rearward pull and forward push instead of the lift-pull-push-lock motion of a traditional bolt gun. That means faster follow-up shots and less movement off target. Savage's Hexlock bearing system locks the bolt into the barrel extension for consistent, reliable lockup.
Yes, it ships with a one-piece 20 MOA rail already mounted on the receiver. The built-in cant gives you extra elevation adjustment in your scope, which is handy when you want to take advantage of the flat-shooting 7mm Rem Mag at longer distances. Just add rings and glass and you are ready to zero.
They can. The bolt handle on the Impulse action can be moved to the left side and adjusted to different angles, so a lefty can cycle it naturally without reaching over the receiver. Combined with the tang safety, which works the same from either shoulder, it is one of the more southpaw-friendly rifles in its class.
