Savage took everything people liked about the Impulse straight-pull action and put it in a package you can carry up a mountain without regretting it. The Mountain Hunter swaps the heavier factory barrel for a Proof Research carbon fiber wrapped stainless steel tube, which sheds serious ounces off the front end while dissipating heat faster and keeping groups tight when the barrel warms up. In .300 Win Mag with a 24 inch barrel, you get the velocity and reach for elk, mule deer, and just about any North American big game at distances where lesser cartridges start running out of steam.
The heart of this rifle is Savage's HexLock system, which uses six hardened steel bearings to lock the bolt into the receiver. Instead of the lift, pull, push, drop routine of a traditional bolt gun, you just pull straight back and push straight forward. That means faster follow-up shots without breaking your cheek weld or losing your sight picture, which matters a lot when a bull is quartering away and you need a second round. The bolt handle can be swapped to either side, and the two-position tang safety and symmetrical stock keep things friendly for lefties.
At roughly 7.3 pounds bare, the Mountain Hunter carries light but still settles down nicely for the shot, a balance a lot of true ultralights miss. The gray AccuStock features Savage's AccuFit system, so you can adjust length of pull and comb height to fit your frame and your scope setup. Speaking of scopes, the aluminum receiver wears an integral one-piece 20 MOA rail, giving long-range hunters extra elevation to work with. The user-adjustable AccuTrigger breaks anywhere from 1.5 to 4 pounds, so you can dial in a crisp, light pull without a trip to the gunsmith.
The muzzle comes threaded 5/8×24 with a brake installed from the factory, which takes a real bite out of .300 Win Mag recoil and makes suppressor mounting simple. Feeding comes from a flush-fit detachable box magazine holding three rounds, for a 3+1 total capacity. Pair it with quality glass and this rifle is ready for opening day right out of the box.

Yes. The 24 inch barrel is threaded 5/8×24, which is the standard pitch for most .30 caliber suppressors and muzzle devices. It ships with a muzzle brake installed, so just spin that off and thread on your can. The carbon fiber barrel keeps the overall package from getting front-heavy once a suppressor is attached.
More than most. The bolt handle can be moved to either side of the receiver, and the tang safety and symmetrical AccuStock work the same from either shoulder. Ejection is out the right side, but overall the Impulse Mountain Hunter is one of the more ambidextrous hunting rifles on the market.
The carbon fiber wrapped stainless steel barrel is dramatically lighter than a steel barrel of the same profile, which is exactly what you want on long climbs. It also dissipates heat faster and dampens barrel vibration, helping the rifle hold its accuracy through strings of fire. It is a big part of why this Impulse weighs well over a pound less than other rifles in the line.
