Savage took their straight-pull Impulse action and built it for the hunter who counts ounces and covers miles. The Mountain Hunter in .300 PRC wears a 24-inch Proof Research carbon fiber wrapped stainless steel barrel, which is a big part of why this rifle balances so well for a magnum chambering. You get the stiffness and heat management of a quality stainless blank without the swing weight of a full steel contour, and the muzzle comes threaded with a brake already installed to tame recoil from the big .30 cal cartridge.
The Impulse action is the headline here. Instead of the traditional lift-pull-push-lock motion, you just pull straight back and push straight forward, which keeps your head on the stock and your eye in the scope for follow-up shots. The bolt locks up with a ring of hardened steel bearings that expand into the receiver, and the bolt handle is removable and can be swapped to either side and adjusted to your preferred angle. Pair that with the two-position tang safety and a symmetrical stock, and lefties are just as at home behind this rifle as right-handed hunters.
Savage's AccuStock gives you aluminum bedding that cradles the action three-dimensionally for consistent accuracy, while the AccuFit system lets you dial in length of pull and comb height so the rifle actually fits your frame and your optic. The AccuTrigger adjusts from 1.5 to 4 pounds without a trip to a gunsmith, and the integral one-piece 20 MOA rail is machined right into the receiver, so there are no scope base screws to shoot loose and plenty of elevation for long pokes.
The .300 PRC was designed from the ground up for heavy, high-BC bullets, making it a natural fit for open-country hunts where wind and distance are real factors. It ships with a two-round detachable box magazine, and the gray synthetic stock shrugs off weather that would have a walnut stock swelling. If your hunts involve steep climbs and long shots, this one earns its spot in the truck.
Instead of lifting and rotating a bolt handle, you simply pull the bolt straight back and push it straight forward to cycle a round. No. The Impulse Mountain Hunter has a one-piece 20 MOA rail machined integrally into the receiver, so you just need rings that fit a Picatinny-style rail. The built-in 20 MOA cant gives you extra elevation travel in your scope, which is handy when you want to stretch the .300 PRC out to longer distances.
.300 PRC is a serious magnum cartridge, but the factory-installed muzzle brake takes a lot of the sting out and helps you stay on target through the shot. The muzzle is threaded, so if you prefer to run a suppressor instead of the brake, you can swap it out. Between the brake and the well-designed AccuStock, it is more pleasant to shoot than the chambering might suggest.
