Most bolt guns make you choose between fast follow-ups and a rifle you can carry all day at elevation. The Savage Impulse Mountain Hunter skips that trade-off. Savage took their American-made straight-pull action, hung a 22 inch Proof Research carbon fiber wrapped stainless steel barrel on it, and trimmed the whole package down to right around 7.1 pounds. Chambered in .30-06 Springfield, it feeds from a 4-round detachable box magazine and wears a durable gray AccuStock synthetic stock built around a full-length aluminum bedding rail.
Instead of the traditional lift-and-pull, the Impulse bolt cycles straight back and straight forward. Six steel ball bearings expand radially from the bolt to lock into a hardened steel insert in the aluminum receiver, giving you a lockup strong enough for modern high-pressure loads while letting you run the bolt without breaking your cheek weld. In practice that means your eye stays in the scope between shots, which matters when a second opportunity on a bull or buck lasts about two seconds. The bolt handle is removable and can be swapped to either side, so lefties get a real rifle here, not an afterthought.
The Proof Research barrel is the headline for mountain work. Carbon fiber wrapping over a stainless core sheds weight up front, stiffens the barrel, and helps it shrug off heat during load development. The muzzle comes threaded 5/8×24 with a radial brake installed, so swapping to a suppressor takes about a minute. Up top there's an integral one-piece 20 MOA rail ready for glass, and the two-position tang safety sits right under your thumb.
The AccuFit system lets you adjust length of pull from 12.75 to 13.75 inches and tweak comb height so your scope lines up naturally, and the user-adjustable AccuTrigger breaks clean anywhere from about 1.5 to 4 pounds. Between the fit adjustments, the trigger, and that Proof barrel, this is a rifle that rewards good shooting straight out of the box. If your hunts involve more boot leather than truck seat, this one earns its spot in the safe.

Yes. The 22 inch Proof Research barrel comes threaded 5/8×24 with a radial muzzle brake installed from the factory. Spin the brake off and most common .30 caliber suppressors thread right on. The 22 inch barrel keeps overall length manageable even with a can attached.
This is one of the better bolt guns out there for lefties. The bolt handle is removable and can be mounted on either side of the action, and the tang safety sits on the centerline where either thumb can reach it. Combined with the AccuFit stock adjustments, it sets up well for just about any shooter.
No sights or optics are included. The receiver has an integral one-piece 20 MOA Picatinny rail machined right in, so mounting a scope is quick and you get extra elevation built in for stretching the .30-06 at longer distances. Just add rings and the glass of your choice and you're ready for the range.
