Straight-pull rifles used to be something you mostly saw in European hunting camps, but Savage changed that with the Impulse, and the Mountain Hunter is the version built for guys who count ounces before elk season. The action cycles with a quick pull and push of the bolt, no lifting required, so you can run a follow-up shot without breaking your cheek weld or losing your sight picture. When a bull hangs up at the edge of the timber and you need a second round fast, that matters.
The 24 inch barrel is a carbon fiber wrapped stainless steel tube from Proof Research, and it does two things well: it sheds weight and it sheds heat. The whole rifle comes in around 7.3 pounds bare, which is impressive for a magnum chambering with this much barrel. The muzzle is threaded 5/8×24 and ships with a brake installed, which takes real sting out of the .28 Nosler. That cartridge is a legitimate long-range hunting round, pushing heavy 7mm bullets fast and flat, and the 1:8.44 twist stabilizes the sleek high-BC stuff it was designed around.
The gray AccuStock synthetic stock has aluminum bedding running through it for consistency shot to shot, and AccuFit inserts let you adjust comb height and length of pull so the rifle fits you instead of the other way around. The user-adjustable AccuTrigger breaks anywhere from 1.5 to 4 pounds, and the aluminum receiver wears an integral one-piece 20 MOA rail, so mounting a scope with enough elevation for extended shots is simple. The bolt handle is removable and can be swapped to either side, a nice touch for lefties or anyone with a preference. A two-position tang safety sits right under your thumb, and the rifle feeds from a 2-round detachable box magazine. For a mountain rifle that carries light, hits hard, and cycles faster than a traditional turn-bolt, this one checks a lot of boxes.
The Impulse uses a straight-pull action, meaning you cycle the bolt with a single rearward pull and forward push instead of the lift-pull-push-drop motion of a traditional turn-bolt. That makes follow-up shots noticeably faster and lets you keep your eye in the scope while you cycle. It locks up with a ball-bearing style system in the aluminum receiver, and Savage builds it for the same accuracy expectations as their conventional rifles.
The rifle weighs right around 7.3 pounds without an optic. That's light for a magnum rifle with a 24 inch barrel, and the Proof Research carbon fiber wrapped barrel is a big reason why. Add a typical hunting scope and rings and you're still looking at a very packable setup for elk country.
Yes, it ships with a muzzle brake installed from the factory, which helps a lot with .28 Nosler recoil. The barrel is threaded 5/8×24, the most common thread pitch for this bore size, so you can remove the brake and attach a suppressor or another muzzle device of your choosing.
Yes, and better than most rifles. The bolt handle is removable and can be repositioned to the left side of the action, so a left-handed hunter can cycle it naturally. The tang safety is also centrally mounted, making it easy to reach from either shoulder.
