Savage went all in on the KLYM series, and it shows. This is their flagship straight pull, built around a 24 inch Proof Research carbon fiber wrapped stainless steel barrel with cut rifling and a 1:10 twist that handles the heavier .300 WSM bullets you want for elk and mule deer. The muzzle comes threaded 5/8×24 with an OmniPort brake installed from the factory, which takes real sting out of a short magnum and makes spotting your own hits a lot more realistic. At around 6.7 pounds before glass, this is a rifle you carry all day without cursing it on the climb out.
The straight pull action is the headline here. Instead of the lift, pull, push, drop routine of a traditional bolt, you rack it straight back and forward without coming off the stock or losing your sight picture. In a hunting situation where a follow up shot happens in seconds, that speed is a genuine advantage. The bolt handle is ambidextrous, removable, and multi positional, threaded 5/16×24 and capped with a carbon fiber knob. Lefties can set this rifle up properly without an aftermarket workaround.
Savage partnered with Fine Ballistic Tools for the stock, and it is a standout piece. The carbon fiber forend and buttstock connect through an additive manufactured center section, with a one button adjustable comb so you can get proper eye alignment behind whatever scope you mount. Two sling studs and the Magnaswitch system come installed. The aluminum receiver carries an integral one piece 20 MOA rail, giving you extra elevation for stretching this cartridge out past typical hunting distances.
The user adjustable AccuTrigger runs from 1.5 to 4 pounds, so you can set a crisp, light break for precision work or bump it up for cold weather with gloves. Feeding comes from a 2 round detachable box magazine. Add a quality scope and this rifle is ready for the kind of hunts where every ounce and every shot counts.
Instead of lifting the bolt handle, pulling back, pushing forward, and locking it down, you simply pull the bolt straight back and push it straight forward. It cuts your cycling time roughly in half and lets you keep your eye on target through the scope. Once you run one, a traditional bolt feels slow by comparison.
Yes. The OmniPort brake threads onto a standard 5/8×24 muzzle, which is one of the most common thread patterns for .30 caliber suppressors and other muzzle devices. Just keep in mind that removing the brake on a .300 WSM this light means you will feel noticeably more recoil unless you replace it with a can.
It is one of the better options out there for lefties. The bolt handle is fully ambidextrous, removable, and can be repositioned to the left side of the action. Combined with the tang safety, a left-handed hunter can run this rifle naturally without compromises.
The receiver has an integral one-piece 20 MOA rail machined in, so all you need are rings and a scope. The built-in cant gives you extra elevation adjustment for longer shots, which suits the flat-shooting .300 WSM well. Something in the 3-15x or 4-20x range with a capped or exposed elevation turret is a solid match for a rifle like this.
