There's a reason the Axis XP shows up in so many deer camps every fall. Savage built this rifle around the stuff that matters, a precision button-rifled carbon steel barrel and thread-in headspacing, then skipped the extras that just add cost. This Compact version takes that same recipe and shortens things up with a 20 inch barrel and a scaled-down synthetic stock, making it a smart pick for youth hunters, smaller-framed folks, or anyone who wants a rifle that's quicker to swing in a blind or easier to pack through thick timber.
The XP part of the name means the optic work is already done. A 3-9×40 scope comes factory mounted and boresighted, so a quick trip to the range to fine-tune zero is all that stands between you and hunting season. Chambering it in .308 Winchester was a good call for a compact rifle too. Ammo is on every shelf in the country, there's a load for everything from whitetail to elk, and the shorter barrel gives up very little in practical hunting performance. The detachable 4-round box magazine keeps the profile slim and makes loading and unloading at the truck simple.
The updated bolt handle has a sleeker, more ergonomic shape that's easier to run with cold hands or gloves on, and the bolt itself cycles smoothly right from the factory. A tang-mounted safety sits right under your thumb, the matte black finish shrugs off weather, and the rubber recoil pad takes the edge off .308 recoil, which matters on a lighter rifle. At around 7.4 pounds scoped, it carries well all day.

Yes. Boresighting gets the scope on paper at the factory, but every rifle and ammo combination shoots a little differently. Plan on a range session to dial in your zero with the hunting load you plan to use before opening day. Most people are dialed in with a box of ammo or less.
Absolutely. You give up a modest amount of velocity compared to a 22 or 24 inch barrel, but at typical hunting distances the difference on game is negligible. The tradeoff is a rifle that's noticeably handier in a blind, a treestand, or thick brush, which is usually worth more in the field.
