Savage builds accuracy in at the factory with a precision button-rifled 22-inch carbon steel barrel and thread-in headspacing, the same approach that earned the brand its reputation for out-of-the-box performance. The XP package means the 3-9×40 scope comes mounted and boresighted from the factory, so a box of ammo and a short session at the bench is all it takes to get dialed in. A detachable 4-round box magazine makes loading and unloading at the truck quick and simple.
At roughly 7.6 pounds scoped and 42.5 inches overall, this rifle carries comfortably on long walks to the stand without feeling whippy on the shot. The black synthetic stock shrugs off rain, snow, and bouncing around in a truck bed, and the recoil pad takes the edge off the .30-06's push. Gen II rifles also let you add a second sling stud, handy if you want to run a bipod and a sling at the same time. The 3-9×40 scope comes mounted and boresighted from the factory, which gets you on paper at the range. Boresighting is not the same as a true zero, though, so plan to fine-tune it with the ammo you intend to hunt with before opening day. Most folks are dialed in within a box of shells.
No, the standard Axis XP uses Savage's standard trigger. If you want the user-adjustable AccuTrigger, that's found on the step-up Axis II XP model. That said, the factory trigger on the Gen II is perfectly serviceable for hunting distances.
