Savage took a budget-friendly platform and gave it the stuff that matters: a user-adjustable AccuTrigger, thread-in headspacing for consistent accuracy, and a button-rifled 22 inch carbon steel barrel. This version is chambered in .30-06 Springfield, a cartridge that has been putting whitetails, mule deer, elk, and black bears on the ground for well over a century. Ammo is everywhere, load options run from light 125 grain varmint rounds up to heavy 220 grain bullets, and it does everything a hunting cartridge needs to do.
The AccuTrigger is the headline feature here, and for good reason. You can adjust the pull weight yourself to get a crisp, clean break without paying a gunsmith, and it makes a noticeable difference when you are trying to squeeze a shot on a cold morning with gloves on. The second-generation Axis also brought a redesigned stock with better ergonomics and improved texturing, plus an updated bolt handle that is easier to run when your hands are wet or half frozen. The gray synthetic stock shrugs off rain, snow, and truck-bed abuse, and the rubber recoil pad takes some of the sting out of the .30-06.
The receiver comes drilled and tapped, so mounting a scope is quick and painless, and sling swivel studs are already in place for a sling or bipod. Feeding comes from a detachable 4-round box magazine, giving you 4+1 capacity and an easy way to load and unload at the truck.
